Safety on the Fells

Most of the higher fells require a whole day to complete a round trip, so allow at least 6 to 8 hours for a big climb. If you are restricted for time then consider one of the many lower fells which are not only less crowded, but often offer better views and certainly are a less demanding climb. Weather conditions in the Keswick area can change very rapidly in a very short space of time and severe weather can descend with little warning. Before commencing your walk/climb consult the local weatherline on 08700 550575 and calibrate any GPS you may have. This recorded service is updated twice daily.  Plan your route carefully taking account of the abilities of all members of the group and leave a copy of your intended walk plan with the establishment where you are staying. In the event of an incident the rescue services will then know your rough whereabouts. Do not be over ambitious. Allow one hour for every 2.5 miles (4Km) and add one hour for every 1500 feet (500M) of accent, with extra time for stops, rest and food. Make sure that you set off in plenty of time to complete your walk and have taken account of the weather forecast and sunset time. If walking on high fells, incorporate into your walk plan escape routes to get you off the tops in the event of severe weather. If you are then subsequently delayed or descend into the wrong valley, inform the Police as quickly as possible, so that the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team is not called out. Remember that most accidents are caused by inappropriate footwear and lack of mountain judgement, leading to underestimation of fell conditions.
