Lunchtime walk to Threlkeld
Around 3.5 - 4 miles each way
Start from Keswick Leisure pool and walk to the old station which is alongside it. The old railway track is seen from the end of what was Keswick Station platform. The way to Threlkeld will be clearly seen ahead as the pathway heads towards a bridge over
Penrith Road
. Continue to follow this path for around four miles as it takes you under the main road to Windermere, past the old bobbin mill and over seven or eight bridges, some of which are several tens of metres long. Eventually you will be deposited on the A66. Staying on the same side of the road as you encountered it, turn right and walk along the pavement for around 100 metres, until you see the sign to Threlkeld pointing to your left. Follow the sign in to the village looking for the Horse & Farrier public house on the left hand side, a distance of another 100 metres or so. Enter, order lunch, enjoy enormously and return home by same route.
Derwentwater Walk
Around 3 miles
Start at Keswick boat jetties and catch the launch to Hawes End. There is a frequent service throughout the year. Upon alighting, follow the shoreline path left, this takes you away from the lake and through a field for a while. Stick to the path that follows the lake edge until you arrive at Brandlehow landing jetty. From this point bear right until a fork is reached. Climb some steps to your left, go through a kissing gate and then bear left between the cottage and a boathouse. At the next fork in the path, go right and head across ground that can be soggy after rain. You soon join another path which goes left to the shore. Follow this path until it joins the road, then you need to turn left towards the Lodore landing stage. From here you can catch the next launch back to the Keswick jetties for a well earned cream tea.
Walla Crag ‘n all that
Around 1.5 miles each way
Follow the streets of Keswick until you find yourself in
St John Street
and follow this until it becomes
Ambleside Road
. Turn right in to Springs Road, follow on until you pass through Springs Farm and then head up an earthen track following the signs. This track will eventually bear right and you will then need to climb steadily along a narrow path alongside a wire fence alongside a telephone mast. Turn left over the small bridge up the other side through the gate and turn right, passing by another farm. Cross the stream again and follow the path upwards and to your left. Then make sure you follow the wall to your right until you see a small gateway. Pass through keeping left and following the path to the summit. One of the most rewarding views of Derwentwater and Borrowdale awaits you. Return by same route.
A stroll up Barrow
Around 5 miles
A rather uninteresting fell from a distance, its main claim to fame being that it caught fire in 2004, So don’t smoke here or history may repeat itself. You should walk or park in Braithwaite village, then head off towards Newlands, turning right from the road at Braithwaite Farm. Even if you think this looks private continue and head straight to it and follow the path upwards. Soon the summit of Barrow will be reached providing you with the views of Derwentwater and
Bassenthwaite
Lake
. At this point you have two choices, you can either go right, down to High Coledale (Near Coledale Inn) or go to the left of Stile End. You need not climb much more and can avoid Outerside as well as you head towards a spot above Coledale. Here you head for the old mines below, walking down Barrow’s grassy slopes to the valley bottom. Follow the track along Coledale Beck, back towards Braithwaite and the Royal Oak Public House.
Latrigg - Here we come
Around 2 miles each way
From the centre of Keswick follow
Station Street
,
Station Road
and the
Brundholme Road
. This will eventually become Briar Rigg if you continue straight on. Within 100 metres or so you will see to your right a signpost to Latrigg. Simply follow this path all the way bearing in mind that the path climbs up the side of the fell so the earlier you strike out to the left to reach the summit the more work you have to do. At your discretion climb/walk to the summit and look down on
Keswick
Town
beneath you. After a well earned rest return by same or similar route.
